The Yeti’s Mission:

The Yeti serves the student body, faculty and staff of Florida State University by providing a progressive media outlet that focuses on issues that affect the campus and the community of Tallahassee. We aim to fill the void left by commercial media outlets and provide a voice to the underrepresented. We are a venue for commentary and artistic expression. We strive to spark a dialogue between students and community members, in hopes that an educated exchange of information will motivate Tallahassee residents to be aware and active members of society.

About The Yeti:

Founded in April 2005 by a small group of students from Florida State University, The Yeti was created as an independent alternative to the corporately owned media found in our community and university. The Yeti exists to serve Tallahassee and Florida State University by acting as an alternative source for local news written by members of the community. We strive to fill the void of unreported local and grassroots issues. Our goal is to provide our university and community with in-depth coverage of topics that impact the community.

Campus Progress

The Yeti is published with support from  Campus Progress. We are a member of the Campus Progress  journalism network.

The Editorial Board

Heidi Kerr

Editor in Chief

editor@theyetionline.com

Heidi is a senior at FSU seeking a dual degree in Communications and English. Her journalism history involves the FSView, WFSU-FM, and V89 News Department.  She is a font enthusiast, and finds the best web-safe fonts are Century Gothic, Palatino Linotype, and, of course, Times New Roman. She finds The Yeti’s Trebuchet MS a fearless choice. She appreciates open source software, dinosaurs, baking, and public radio.

Morgan Kayser

News Editor

Originally from Boston, Morgan possesses the liberalism, love of lobster and tolerance of cold weather necessary to be a good New Englander. However, after a big move to Atlanta, Georgia, the South gifted her with a fierce love of literature and a persistent addiction to sugar. And butter. And anything Paula Deen. Now a Creative Writing/Psychology major at Florida State University and news editor of The Yeti, Morgan learns more every day. She deals with conflict by asking herself one question: WWMTD? And Mark Twain never answers. So she figures it out herself.

Yveka Pierre

Assistant News Editor

Yveka Pierre is currently a junior at Florida State University, and is the assistant News Editor for the Yeti. She has been freelancing since she was fifteen years old.  Her articles have been on the wires and feature in the South Florida’s Sun-sentinel. She is an International affairs major and journalism minor. She does not like long walks on the beach but prefers to just sit down and view the ocean. She is always open to legitimate people wanting an outlet to be heard, as long as they don’t mind her finding out all sides of the story. Fluent in Haitian Creole, and English, she is also very interested in different languages and cultures. She was born in Haiti and immigrated to America at the age of seven. She is well versed in Haitian as well as American culture. She grew up in south Florida which allowed her to get an inside look at people from all types of backgrounds and cultures.

Joanna Drivalas

Entertainment & Culture Editor

culture@theyetionline.com

Joanna is a product of the School of Theatre and creative writing department at Florida State.  She is excited to help bring The Yeti back to life, and is enjoying community theatre in her free time.

Erika Sloop

Assistant Entertainment & Culture Editor

Erika Sloop is freshman and a Creative Writing major. She has never lived for anywhere more than three years. Her favorite thing about working for the Yeti is (aside from the awesome people) that she is able to tell people that she works for a creature that may or may not exist.

Sydney Weinberg

Literature Editor

literature@theyetionline.com

Sydney Weinberg likes good conversation, outlandish earrings, riding her bike, trying and generally failing to stick it to the man, earl grey tea, arranging sexy poems on the fridge with her roommate’s erotic magnet set, and reading novels that embrace the curious, essential marriage of humor and pathos. She loves escaping to Europe, and shall do so permanently upon graduation, even if she has to eat crackers for a year to manage it. Her resulting snobbiness (as actually the crackers will be slathered in brie) she’s happy to channel into her work as the Yeti’s first literary editor.
