Coup in Mali Losing Stability

On April 1st, the new president of Mali, Captain Amadou Haya Sanogo, announced that he would be reinstating the free elections and constitution that he had abolished after the coup he led seized control of the country. This move was made as a result of numerous neighboring countries having issued sanctions against Sanogo’s group along with other world powers saying that they would not support this new government. There is a great possibility of them soon falling out of power and the previous government being reinstated.

Statement from The Yeti

A tweet was recently published on our Twitter that was not authorized by The Yeti organization. I personally was appalled and offended when notified of the tweet by our readers, many of whom e-mailed me to let me know their thoughts about the tweet. I would like to let our readers know, with the support and agreement of the rest of The Yeti staff, that we condemn the tweet and that type of discriminatory behavior just as you do. It does not align with my values or the values of this organization, and we take this situation extremely seriously. We offer our sincerest apologies to anyone offended by the tweet and promise it will not happen again. The tweet has been removed and the editor involved has been reprimanded. Twitter and Facebook access for all other editors has been restricted. We appreciate the actions our readership took to notify us of this tweet so that it could be handled as quickly as possible.

I’d also like to address some controversy over a recently published opinion piece. As a newspaper focusing on alternative viewpoints, we sometimes run into the difficulty of having people disagree with those viewpoints. We hope this disagreement will not result in anger or frustration, but intelligent discourse on the disagreed-upon subject. This discussion is the goal of our organization. For that reason, we are always open to article submissions with contradictory views and consistently offer those with dissenting views opportunity to express them in our publication. Please e-mail us at fsuyeti@gmail.com if you’d like to write a counterpoint article. This article should be somewhere around 750 words and address your opinions on gender roles. One counterpoint will be edited and published online. I may not agree with every viewpoint published in The Yeti, but I stand by and defend our writers’ abilities to express their opinions and promote discussion in our community.

Though debate over the viewpoints of a writer is understandable and even encouraged, it is unacceptable when it reaches a personal level. Personal insults, discrimination and threats will not be tolerated. Comments including them will be removed per our new comment policy, which can be viewed on the “About Us” page.

I thank you for your interest and support for The Yeti and hope that, despite disagreements, you will continue to read and respect our publication.
