As one graduate of the anthropology program at FSU (BA and MS degrees), I am truly appalled to learn that it's being suspended. Anthropology is a young discipline relative to the other legacy disciplines like Sociology, but it has so much more to offer to help us navigate an increasingly complex world of today.

I'm currently teaching an undergraduate course in medical anthropology here at the University of Louisiana because I had taken a similar course at FSU back in the 1970's.

And I teach a course in Forensic Anthropology here because of a similar course taken at FSU. IN fact, that undergraduate course at FSU was one of the first college courses teaching Forensic Archaeology anywhere in the United States.

Anthropology graduates here at UL (and I'm sure FSU) have gone into careers in medicine, law, geology (geophysical surveys), public health, archaeology (Cultural Resource Management), and even military intelligence.

sad day indeed,

Yeah, I know. Education and social services are among the first things to go in tight economic times, no matter what state you live in. But education, especially, should be considered vital, rather than a small "frin ill". Education, at all levels is vital to a functional, orderly society, and tends to reduce problems caused by poverty, because fewer educated people are poor, among other things. And cutting anthropology departments is just plain silly. Anthropology is kind of bridge between "social" sciences and the "hard" ones. There is a strong "biological" element in anthropology, which every student of an introductory course will learn, if they learn nothing else. This counteracts against the influence of creationism, among other things, but that's another story. This is very, very sad. But then, Florida is gaining a reputation of sorts, for things like this.
